1998 Freezeree

The 1998 Fremont District Freezeree was held at the Three Creeks Snow Park, just outside Sisters.

Some Troop 21 Scouts, having bartered
bartered their hard won event tickets for
matches, tinder, foil, and firewood, attempt
to be the first to build a fire hot enough
to pop some corn. Scouts include Taylor
Bushnell, Roger Wykes, Eric Fredstrom, Joe
Morrison, and Eric Harvey. (If you are in
this picture and not listed, let the Troop 21
webmaster know!)

In the Hot Isotope competition, the scouts
have to work together as a team to transport a
can of water over to snuff a candle. Scouts
include Bend Lewis, Scott Laird, Alex Spreier,
Mike Davis, Jared Whitney, and Spencer Ardt.

Judges Stu Laird and Ray Spreier show
no mercy as scouts race to tie a square
knot, two half hitches, sheetbend, taut
line hitch, timber hitch, bowline, figure
eight, and a clove hitch. Here Brendan
Bradford demonstrates his knot tying skill.
Joe Morrison and Eric Fredstrom thread
their way through a narrow obstacle course
in the forest while carrying a twelve foot
pole.
In the Snow Chair competition, the patrols
have five minutes to build the highest chair
AND put a scout on top. The highest structure
wins.
In the Woodcutting Relay, each scout in
the patrol has to saw through a log. Here,
Ben Lewis and Scott Laird provide "ballast".
Everyone pitches in to break camp just
as a new snowstorm moves in. At least the
weather waited until the Freezeree was over
this year!
