Head For the Hills!
The Head For the Hills ride was a 25 mile, one way course from the Mount Bachelor Ski Area down
the Cascade Lakes Highway to Cultus Lake. The beginning of the course was a downhill cannonball
run from Mount Bachelor down to Sparks Lake and the Cascade Lakes basin. The rest of the ride
was rolling hill terrain which helped build endurance. After a week of horrendous thunderstorms,
the weather Saturday morning was crystal clear with highs in the 70's. You couldn't have
picked a better day.
Ride organizer Scott Smith sacrificed
his Explorer to duct tape in order to
carry the signs warning drivers that they
were about to encounter 28 cyclists on the
highway.
Riders prep their bikes and gear in the
parking area at Mount Bachelor.
Everyone is saddled up and ready to ride! |
The first rest area was 12 miles into the
course at the Elk Lake resort. Everyone had
a chance to cool their heels (and their rear
end) and have some ice cream.
The lower part of the course offered
spectacular views of Mount Bachelor, South
Sister, Broken Top, and other 10,000 ft+
snow covered peaks.
The first group of scouts makes it to
the Cultus Lake turnoff. Only two miles
to go!
Assistant Scoutmasters Don Leonard and
Chuck Colclough check in at the turn.
Scott Smith made sure that no one missed
the turnoff.
to go!
Ann Owings checks in at the turnpoint.
And finally the last rider heads up the
road toward Cultus. (Except for the guy taking
the pictures).
