1998 Troop 21 San Juan Islands Bike Trek |
In lieu of summer camp for 1998, Troop 21 chose to embark on a week-long bicycle tour of the San Juan Islands (which are located in the Northern Puget Sound / Straits of Juan de Fuca area between the State of Washington and Victoria, British Columbia, Canada).
The troop spent months planning and preparing for this trip. As
it was planned to take only four vehicles onto the Islands via
ferry, bikes would be the primary mode of transportation. To
ensure that the scouts were physically prepared, a series of
training rides were scheduled. These rides also would fulfill
requirements for the cycling merit badge (two 10s, two 15s, and
two 25s, plus the 50 on San Juan Island).

| Les Schwab Tire Stores | For their donation of four new wheels / hubs for the troop trailer. | |
| Hutch's Bicycles of Bend | For their time in presenting a session on bike maintenance and adjustment to the troop, and for their generous preparation of a parts kit for the troop to take on the trip. | |
| G.I. Joe's of Bend | For their generous donation of an additional patrol camp stove. | |
| U-Haul Hitch World of Bend | For their discount on the trailer rental. | |

| Bend Sandblasting Robert Maxea Bend Body Shop Denfeld Paints Robert Culpepper Painting Bend Kampground |
For their contributions and donation of the materials and labor involved in re-finishing the troop trailer. Alas, Yorrick, the yellow banana served us well. All hail the white ghost! | |
| The United States Air Force, McChord AFB | For making the on-post campground available to our troop, and for treating our scouts to breakfast at the mess hall at a greatly reduced cost. | |
| "Jeannie" at the Washington State Ferry Terminal in Anacortes | For dealing with the sudden onslaught of 57 people, 12 vehicles, and 31 cyclists with calm, grace, and cheerfulness. Your attitude in handling a complex ticketing situation helped start this trip out on a positive note. | |
| Island Bicycles of Friday Harbor | For the "hop-to" rebuilding of a new rim for Ben Lewis, allowing him to catch up to the group on Orcas and continue the ride. | |
| Nan Johnston at Sheperd Resources | For the late hours and the marshalling of vendors to get the printed materials | |
| Mike Mickel | For rescuing the T-shirt order and getting them done on time. | |
| Amigo's It's Hot! of Friday Harbor | For having a mind boggling selection of the hottest sauces on the face of the Earth. Everyone will long remember Jamaican Batch #110, Batch #114, and yes, Screaming Sphincter. | |
| And last, but not at all least... All the parents and adults that spent months in planning, phone calls, and endless meetings, and then spent their hard earned money and vacation time to go to the San Juans to act as ride leaders, cooks, cleanup patrol, and advancement counselors. |
