Cultus Lake Pack Trip |
| and Advancement Outing |
Cultus Lake lies high in the Central Oregon Cascades. It is located in the basin just south of the Three Sisters and SW of Mount Bachelor, in the Cascade Lakes Chain. The boys from Troop 21 chose Cultus Lake as their venue for the Fall Advancement Outing. The advancement outings are held twice per year, and are focused camps designed to provide boys working on their Trail to First Class with maximum opportunity to complete requirements for rank advancement. Skils such as knots and lashings, first aid, survival, map and compass, food handling and cooking, swimming, plant and animal identification, and safe knife and axe handling are all addressed.
The boys started at the Cultus Lake camp area and (using a topo map and compass) backpacked around the lake to the west shore. There they found a nice sandy beach where the set up shop for the weekend.
| Amidst all the advancement activity, the guys take some time to swim and relax. The makeshift dock was made by earlier campers primarily to deal with canoe traffic. | ![]() |

Cultus Mountain rises in the background. The lake is a volcanic basin that was filled from glacial runoff from the Three Sisters area. |
