Summer 2000
Bachelor to Bend Cannonball Run

One of the great things about living in Central Oregon are the vast number of outdoor activities available. Just west of Bend, there are miles and miles of singletrack and doubletrack trails for mountain bike riders. In the summer, the bike trails, coupled with the cross country skiing and snowmobiling trails, make for some great rides. One of the lesser known facts is that it is possible to ride from Mt. Bachelor all the way back to Bend (about 30 miles) without ever touching pavement until the last two miles.

The route starts at the Dutchman Flat / Tumalo Mtn parking area. The trail then winds around the front of Tumalo Mtn, then cuts up and over the saddle near the Vista Butte summit. Here, the Flagline Tie trail cuts down the north side of Vista Butte to the Flagline Trail. The route then follows the Flagline Trail down into the Swampy Lakes Ski Area, entering at the north / back side near the Swampy Lakes Shelter. The trail runs along the ridge over to the Swede Ridge Shelter. From here, the route picks up FS road 100 down into the Virginia Meissner Ski Complex. At the bottom of FS100, you meed
