Mike Davis Eagle Project |
| USFS Range Fence Removal |
The Eagle Service Project is a major undertaking for the candidate. He must demonstrate oranizational and leadership capabilities in directing others as they work together to carry out a major service project for the benefit of the community. Mike Davis chose to work with the US Forest Service, Bend / Fort Rock Ranger District to assist in the removal of several miles of obsolete range fence. This fence, once constructed to protect new growth following a fire, is now no longer required, and presents an impediment to wildlife and recreational users. Mike rallied the troop and supporters from the community to assist in removing a large stretch of fence adjacent to the Skeleton Cave Fire area off China Hat Road south of Bend. About 55 people came out to support Mike in this effort, working from 0800 to 1530. Crews walked the fenceline to free the barbed wire from the poles and to remove the retainer wire. They were followed by Scouts who picked up the loose wire. A third crew followed, separating the strands safely. Once the area was cleared, the fence wire was rolled up in 200 yard segments using a power roller provided by the USFS. Finally, crews followed to remove T-stakes and wooden fence poles. Mike estimates that over 500 man-hours went into this project. Mike wishes to thank everyone who pitched in to assist him in this effort, and also to thank Subway North of Bend for the great sandwiches, McDonald Portable Toilets for the indispensible facilities, and Kirby Naglehout Construction for the use of the truck and landfill account.
