2001 Advancement Outing

Every spring, Troops see an influx of new scouts. Some come from Cub Scout Packs - 2nd year Webelos who have earned their Arrow of Light award and have formally "crossed over". Others are new scouts recruited from schools. How to help these new scouts hit the ground running? How to help them quickly become familiar with our troop gear, tents, stoves, and patrol boxes? We believe the best way is to stage an "Advancement Outing" geared specifically for the younger scouts. They arrive early on a Saturday morning to find the patrol gear arrayed and awaiting them. Their first task is to work together under the guidance of the older scouts to setup tents, patrol boxes, dining fly, and stoves. The menu has been preplanned for this one event, and the food purchased for them. They work together to prepare the meals and cleanup. The rest of the weekend is spent in focused skill sessions, learning basic requirements on the Trail to First Class. We believe that
