2001 Snow Shelter Workshop
Swampy Lakes Ski Area

Before the Scouts embark on their winter camping schedule (District Freezeree, Makualla Ski-in, High Adventure Ski Outing), the troop tries to ensure that all Scouts are well versed in winter survival and in the building of proper shelters for snow camping. The December meetings focus on winter gear, winter survival, and nutrition. At the first sufficient accumuation of snow, we head for the hills to do the annual snow shelter workshop. Here the Scouts have a hands-on opportunity to practice bulding igloos and snow caves. This year the workshop was held at the Swampy Lakes Ski Area, about 18 miles up the Cascade Lakes Hwy from Bend.

The assembled group flattens an area for the floor of the igloo and begins to lay out the base ring. (Front L-R) Eric Fletcher (Scout),, Jerry Rood (ASM), Erik Oberbarnscheidt (1C). (Back L-R) Rick Fletcher, Ray Spreier (SM), Dan Hogrefe (ASM), Henry Oberbarnscheidt (ASM), Eric Brown (ASM), Benjamin Schwarz (1C), Kevin Brown (1C), and Joe Hogrefe (2C). Other guys are off building their snow caves.
Laying out the base ring of snow blocks.
Henry shows Rick how to cut snow blocks using a 12 x 24 piece of formica or lexan.
Once the igloo is done, you dig down below floor level and cut an entrance hole up and into the igloo. This will act as a heat trap, keeping the cold air from coming in to the igloo.
Laying the blocks around the entrance.
The finished product.
