2001 Makualla Ski-in
Crescent Lake, Oregon

One of the highlights for our troop is the annual Makualla Ski-in. This is a joint outing that we usually hold with Troop 27 in Redmond. This year we were also joined by another Troop from Grants Pass. Troop 21 considers this a venture activity, and limits participation to Scouts who have achieved the rank of First Class or higher. This is to ensure that all participants have had the proper first aid, outdoor, and survival training for winter conditions.

The troops meet at the Crescent Lake junction parking lot and off load the gear. Some scouts and scouters choose to snowshoe, while others choose to cross country ski the 5-7 miles around the lake to Camp Makualla BSA. The heavier gear and food was sledged in by snowmobiles. Makualla is the Fremont District summer camp, and the dining hall facilities are made available to the troops who can find their way in during the winter months.

The boys and adults had a great time, and most earned the Snow Sports merit badge (nordic skiing elective).

Map of the location. Crescent Lake is roughly 75-80 miles SSW of Bend, on Oregon Hwy 58 which runs from Chemult over Willamette Pass and down to Eugene. Camp Makualla is on the S side of the lake.
ASM Bob Dickey guides the boys in unloading the two snowmobiles which will be used to sledge in the heavy gear.
Warming up in the parking lot. (L-R) Brett Finneran (Star), Schuyler Leonard (Life), and ASM Doug Schwarz.
(L-R) Adam Dickey (SPL, Life), Nathan Rogers (1C), and ASM Doug Schwarz load the sledges. Unknown butt (sorry).
The assembled crew starts off down the road.
ASM Eric Brown steps out of the skis to take a lunch break at Simax Beach. Alex Spreier (ASPL, Life) pulls the dog sled with light gear in the background. Ya-mule!
It just doesn't get much better than this. Lunch along the shore of Crescent Lake, with west shore and Diamond Peak in the background.
